The Road to 2011
By: Lee | July 9th, 2009
For the past week, there hasn’t been too much soccer, especially Whitecaps related. But that doesn’t mean stuff isn’t happening, especially if you dig for it.
In fact, behind the scenes the Whitecaps and their supporters are doing a lot to prepare for their move to Major League Soccer. The club is looking at rebranding itself and new supporters groups are forming.
What’s in a name?
The Whitecaps are currently doing a branding survey. There are some odd questions, like what kind of car would best describe the Whitecaps (I chose Toyota Prius). However, what most people will find interesting is the choice of team names in 2011:
- Vancouver Whitecaps FC
- Vancouver FC
- Vancouver United
- Real Pacific
What many of you are probably asking is “Why have this survey?” Yes, everybody loves the Whitecaps name, including the the FO. Unfortunately, so I’ve heard, they might not have that option. In 2002, when David Stadnyk stepped down as owner, the clubs rights were given to the USL, who then found Greg Kerfoot as an owner. The naming rights are stuck with the USL, and the Whitecaps may have to leave them behind when they make the jump to MLS. Of course, there are people behind the scenes who are doing everything they can to make sure that doesn’t happen.
Even if we were to suppose in some horrible reality that the Whitecaps name is dropped, it turns out that the next best option – Vancouver FC – is already taken by a Vancouver Youth Team.
New Supporters Groups
The excitement building for 2011 is not lost on supporters groups, who are looking to expand. Check out this video of the Vancouver Southsiders, who have done a great job this year:
There is also efforts to start new supporters groups. If you plan on going to games starting in 2011 and interested in helping Vancouver have the best soccer atmosphere in Canada, check these groups out.

What’s your take on the name game, Lee? If Whitecaps FC and Vancouver FC are not possibilities, would you like the two other options? Vancouver United seems too made up to me, but Real Pacific might have some potential? Or do you know of any other suggestions that are being tossed around?

I dunno, everybody’s really gunning for Whitecaps, including me. I agree with you, Vancouver seems to contrived. The Vancouver Royals existed before the Whitecaps, maybe they could try that.
