Ugly Weather, Nice Result – Whitecaps 4-2 Islanders
By: Lee | July 26th, 2009
Teams have a habit of responding when things get ugly. Of course there are exceptions (see New York Red Bulls), but it is remarkable how well teams play soon after a coach is fired or something controversial or tragic happens off the pitch.
Things were certainly ugly for the Whitecaps with the release of Wesley Charles. The season so far has been pretty ugly and for this game the opponent was ugly, the weather was ugly…heck some of the goals were ugly.
But the result wasn’t – and that’s what matters.
It all started with an ugly goal in the Whitecaps favor. An unfortunate back pass gave K-Fed er… Marcus Haber probably the easiest goal of his career. Play was back and forth until a 2 hour rain delay that turned Swangard Stadium into a massive slip and slide.
After the break, Puerto Rico gift-wrapped another goal for the Whitecaps, this time from an own-goal off a Tyrell Burgess corner kick. It was Whitecaps 2-0, but really the scoreline should’ve read Puerto Rico 2 Islanders 0.
And then came an absolute gem out of the ugliness. Marlon James collects the ball and blasts a beautiful goal from just outside the 18-yard box. He later heads in his sixth goal of the season. It’s a shame he has been injured for so much of this season: the guy is a force to be reckoned with.
Puerto Rico scores some late goals making the final score 4-2 in favour of the Whitecaps.
Good teams come together when things get ugly. We’ve got a good team, they’re just learning
