WTF??? Vancouver 3-2 Miami (Singing the) Blues

By: Lee | June 13th, 2009

What the hell??? I really don’t what to think after this game.

Things were going fine. The Whitecaps were leading and dominating play against the lowly Blues after dropping an early goal. Were up a goal and up a man. It looked like the team had finally responded from a run bad league results.

And then things got really weird. I guess I should have first seen it when Marco Reda caused the ball to fortunately bounce off him and into the net. This made the game 3-1 and should have wrapped it up.

But then we give up a freekick 25 yards out, and the Miami player belts on the underside of the crossbar. The rebound bounces out and a Miami player is first to it, and lo and behold, we have a game again. Even though they are down a man.

A few moments later, Nash sends in a great ball to James and we have a two-on-one. As players do at this level, James and Gbeke decide to make it interesting and play a game of ‘No, you have the ball’. As you can expect, they squander a glorious opportunity to put the game away.

Pretty frustrating to watch, but apparently not as frustrating for me as it was for Wesley Charles. He says some choice words to Gbeke and the next thing you know it we have a brawl. AMONGST OUR OWN TEAM. Charles is given a red card, and takes an early trip to the showers.

A few minutes later, his ‘adversary’ would be joining him. Gbeke, who had been the hero up until now by scoring two goals, was subbed off. Rather than basking in the applause of the fans, he goes and kicks the shit out of a bunch of water bottles. He is promptly red-carded as well.

The Whitecaps hang on to win.

I don’t what could cause such animosity (sleeping with the same girl?), but it’s got to end NOW. You could see how pissed off Lenarduzzi and Teitur were at the end. We’ve got a long way to go in the league and have to be ready for the Champions League games that we will almost certainly play.

Better to get the animosity out of the way NOW, rather than in the CCL…but wow, that team has some issues.

Yeah, that was certainly strange when I heard about it during the 24th Minute live blog. I’ve got to see the “highlights” before rendering a verdict though.

I have never been embarassed as a Whitecaps supporter until that display by Charles and Gbeke — especially Gbeke at the end! Arrogant and utterly self-concerned. His fans applaud and he kicks the bottles? Classless.
